Jin-Moo Lee, MD, PhD

Jin-Moo Lee, MD, PhD, is Professor of Neurology, Radiology, and Biomedical Engineering; and Head of the Cerebrovascular Disease Section in the Department of Neurology; Co-Director of the Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University. Born in South Korea, he immigrated with his family to the United States in 1964 when he was two years old. He graduated from Yale College with a degree in Molecular Biology and Biophysics in 1985, and earned an MD and PhD in Neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical College in 1993. After completing neurology residency training at the University of Pennsylvania and fellowship training in vascular neurology at Washington University, he joined the faculty at Washington University in 1997 where he has since remained. Dr. Lee’s research focuses on the pathophysiology and cellular/molecular mechanisms involved in brain injury following acute ischemia and chronic neurodegeneration. He has a translational research laboratory that utilizes cellular and animal models to study the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease and ischemic brain injury. In addition, he has a substantial clinical research operation that studies the pathophysiology and genetics of acute ischemic stroke. He has received numerous awards for teaching, and has mentored over 30 students, post-docs, and junior faculty, many of whom are currently independent researchers at academic medical centers. In addition, he has been recognized in the “Best Doctors in America” list since 2009.
