Dr. Rutter is founder and CEO of Metaphase Design Group, a design firm serving industrial, commercial and consumer product and packaging clients internationally. He is an acknowledged specialist in ergonomic product design and a leading worldwide expert in the design of handheld products and instruments. His work ranges from robotic surgical systems, surgical instruments and medical devices, to smart phones, computer input devices, wearable technology and to food and beverage packaging and beauty and personal care products.
Dr. Rutter serves on the Industrial Design Advisory Panel for the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and as an Ambassador for the Industrial Design Society of America. He is a member of the Human Factors & Ergonomics Society. Dr. Rutter has served as juror on national and international design award programs including the Consumer Electronics Show Innovation Awards, the Industrial Design Excellence/ID Magazine Awards and the Medical Design Excellence Awards. He has received more than 140 international design excellence awards and has been awarded more than 100 patents.
Prior to founding Metaphase, Dr. Rutter served as Vice President of Herbst LaZar Bell, Inc., a longstanding leader in industrial and consumer product design and design research and as principal of Design Research Unit, a firm specializing in technology design research.
Dr. Rutter received a Ph.D. in Kinesiology with a Specialization in Hand Function and an MFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
